The beautiful setting of New Braunfels — bordered by two rivers in the heart of Texas Hill Country — makes it the perfect place for love to blossom.

Whether you want to explore the charming sights of Gruene Historic District, take a tube trip for two down Comal River, or cuddle up at an iconic drive-in movie theatre; enjoy a uniquely romantic weekend in this top Texas tourist destination.

Day 1

Morning

Kick off your weekend by taking to the water with a romantic boat trip on Canyon Lake.

With two well-equipped marinas and over 80 miles of shoreline, this huge lake is a spectacular spot for a leisurely sailing trip.

Spot a variety of nature and wildlife from the comfort of your own deck, and leave time to lounge at the public beach areas — ideal for summertime swimming and sunbathing.

Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Huisache Grill and Wine Bar for a deliciously memorable lunch with your loved one. You’ll find fresh, local ingredients served up in a warm, inviting atmosphere — complete with excellent, friendly staff — making it perfect for an intimate lunch for two.

Make sure you enjoy a drink together in the outdoor living room before sitting down for your meal.

Afternoon

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Gruene Historic District is a must-see on any visit to New Braunfels, and a great place to wander hand-in-hand.

Dating back to the 1800s, uncover the area’s fascinating German colonial roots on a self-guided walking tour. From Gruene Bridge and Water Tower to Gruene Hall — the oldest dance hall in Texas — you’ll find plenty of interesting historical sights to explore together here. Plus, there are numerous unique eateries and boutique stores to discover, including the charming Gruene General Store and Dancing Bear, which dates back to 1897.

After a day spent exploring the sights of New Braunfels, cap off the afternoon with sundowners at popular Gruene drinking hole, Cantina Del Rio.

Fashioned after a south Texas Ice House, and housed in a historical building from the early 1900s; this classic Tex Mex restaurant has a great deck — perfect for classic cocktails as you watch the sunset. Don’t miss its award-winning, ice-cold margaritas.

Evening

Time for dinner, and look no further than the iconic Gristmill restaurant, also located in Gruene Historic District, just a few steps away.

Set on the banks of the Guadalupe River, beneath the famous Gruene water tower, find an outside table for a rustic yet romantic setting, complete with scenic riverside views. You’ll find a mouthwatering range of dishes on the menu, including authentic South Texas favorites such as fried catfish and tomatillo chicken — delicious!

Not ready to retire just yet? Gruene Hall, built in 1878, is Texas’ oldest and most famous dance hall. Whether you’re a country music fan or not, you can’t help but have fun together here. With great drinks, dancing, and an amazing atmosphere, it’s an unbeatable choice for an authentic Texas night out.

Day 2

Morning

Start your second day with a stroll down to Prince Solms Park: a lovely little spot located right on the banks of the Comal River. Bring a breakfast picnic, have a morning dip in the cool, clear waters, or simply relax together people-watching on its scenic, green lawns.

Time to hit the water? Prince Solms Park is also home to the City Tube Chute — a water slide carved into the City’s dam, right on the river. Whatever time of year you visit, with warm year-round temperatures, it’s the perfect place to kick-off your river tubing ride.

Rent inflatable tubes from Corner Tubes or Rockin ‘R’ River Rides, just across the street, and whizz down the chute; before enjoying a more leisurely trip, floating side-by-side down the spring-fed Comal River. (Tubes with coolers are also available for morning beers or mimosas...)

After splashing about on the river, it’s time to rest and refuel with some homecooked, comfort favorites at Pat’s Place, on South Union Avenue.

This iconic eatery has been serving up great-tasting food since the 1970s, and has all your cravings covered — from huge salads to specialty burgers to incredible sandwiches, including the Philly Cheese Steak and Catfish Po’Boy.

Afternoon

Calling all wine-lovers! Spend the afternoon together at Dry Comal Creek Vineyards, located just 10 minutes out of town in the heart of New Braunfels Hill Country.

Enjoy a casual tasting session of very ‘drinkable’ wines for just $10, at this small, friendly vineyard; sit back and relax on its scenic patio, complete with stone tables and fire pits; and take in the incredible panoramic views. The perfect setting for a memorable vacation snap.

Evening

For a uniquely romantic and memorable dinner venue, look no further than Myron’s Prime Steakhouse. Famous for its succulent steaks, extensive wine list, and first-class service, it’s ideal for special occasions — and a fitting place to enjoy the last meal of your trip together.

Book ahead for an intimate table for two under its ornately-stamped tin ceiling, and feast on corn-fed steaks, whole lobster, and more, expertly paired with some of the region’s best wines.

Top off your romantic break and make like you’re in the movies, with an evening show at the Stars and Stripes Drive-in. Whether you want to catch a classic movie or the latest Hollywood release, this really is the only way to do it in New Braunfels.

Cozy up with your loved one for the perfect Texas date night under the stars — and be sure to leave space for the drive-in’s delicious hand-spun milkshakes!
